The East Adelaide School Zone

Children living within the East Adelaide School Zone can be enrolled at the school once proof of residence is provided. Children living outside of the zone can only be enrolled if there are spaces available in the child’s year level at the time when they are to commence school. An early indication of intention to enrol assists us with planning. Children living outside of the zone are placed on a waiting list in order of application. The zone boundary is:

Hackney Road, North Terrace, Magill Road, Portrush Road, Lower Portrush Road and the section of the River Torrens between Lower Portrush Road and Hackney Road.

Beginning school for the first time

Most students enrol at East Adelaide at the same time as they enrol at preschool, as the four terms provided at preschool precede entry to school.

In South Australia, children are not legally required to begin formal schooling until they are six, although most children enrol to begin school soon after their fifth birthday. It is also possible for children who have been identified during their preschool years as highly gifted for the option of beginning school before the age of five to be considered. This option is discussed in conjunction with preschool staff.

Admission dates

Children commencing school for the first time usually begin on the first day of the term after they turn five.

Depending on the date of admission, the progress of children generally follows the following pattern:

  • Children admitted at the beginning of first term will have 12 terms (3 years) in Junior Primary classes (a full year in Reception, Year One and Year Two)

  • Children admitted at the beginning of second term will have 11 terms

  • Children admitted at the beginning of the third term will normally have 10 terms

  • Children admitted at the beginning of the fourth term will have 13 terms (the remainder of the year and the full following year in Reception, a year in year one, and a year in year two)

Our students enrol from a wide range of local preschools and childcare centres. Our school has regular contact with centres in our immediate neighbourhood, and if it can be arranged, the Reception teacher will visit your child at preschool prior to beginning at East Adelaide.

Transition from Preschool to School

If we are holding an enrolment form, have sighted proof of residence or have room for out of zone students, then we will write to your child about a month before entry and extend an invitation to visit on a number of occasions before the actual starting date. The dates for visiting are planned each year, and can be given to you by the Secretary or by checking the calendar on the website. You are also encouraged to bring your child at other times such as weekends to use the play equipment and help in becoming familiar with new surroundings.

Visiting school

Visiting mornings are planned from 8:50am until noon. Children are assisted to get to know the School layout, their new classroom and classmates, and are involved in a range of activities and programmes which make up the School day. Children need only bring a snack and drink for recess, and a broad brimmed or legionnaire hat. We have noted that most children who visit wear our school uniform, so you may wish to buy uniform items from the school beforehand.

New Parent Mornings

An opportunity for parents to tour the school, meet with the Principals, and discuss school programmes is organised in conjunction with each set of visiting days. Parents who have not yet completed an enrolment form, but who are giving consideration to the possibility of their child attending East Adelaide (either to begin school, or to transfer in from another school) are welcome to attend a New Parent Morning. Dates of New Parent Mornings are available from the school secretary or by checking the calendar on the website.

Transferring from other schools

Many students transfer to East Adelaide from within South Australia, from interstate, and from overseas. A number of students attend East Adelaide while families are undertaking work placements or study in Adelaide. We encourage parents to provide information from the previous school, including samples of student work so that we can make appropriate placements and maintain continuity of the learning programme to the best of our ability.
